If you’re preparing for a move to Southeast Michigan, there are a number of tasks you’ll need to complete before relocating to cities such as Detroit, Ann Arbor, Flint, Warren, or Livonia. This guide from REALTOR® Jason Gelios will tell you everything you need to know to plan a stress-free move into your new Michigan home!

Choosing the Right City, Neighborhood, and Home

Making the decision to move to Southeast Michigan is just the start. You’ll also need to choose a city, neighborhood, and the right type of home for your household.

  • Discover some of the best cities in Southeast Michigan to call home.
  • Keep an eye out for homes in hidden gem neighborhoods such as Georgetown South, Keatington, Waterstone, and Foxcroft.
  • Explore local options for public transportation.
  • Get approved for a home mortgage.
  • Contact an experienced REALTOR® to start looking for homes in your desired cities.

Planning a Move to Southeast Michigan

Complete the following tasks at least a few weeks before you’re scheduled to move to Southeast Michigan.

  • Decide whether to hire professional movers to assist you on moving day. It’s best to obtain multiple moving quotes about seven weeks in advance of your move.
  • Change your address with the United States Postal Service (USPS).
  • If you receive Medicare or Social Security benefits, be sure to notify the Social Security Administration (SSA) of your new address.
  • Set up the utilities in your new home, including internet, cable, electricity, water, and sewer.
  • Compare homeowner and automobile insurance rates if your current provider does not operate in your new Michigan city.
  • Clean your current home and leave it in good condition for the new residents.

Settling Into Your New Home

After all that hard work and planning, it’s finally time to clean your new home, update your driver’s license, and enjoy all that Southeast Michigan has to offer!

  • Start by deep cleaning your new home, especially areas such as the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry area, and light fixtures.
  • If you’re a new Michigan resident, be sure to register your vehicle(s) in the state and obtain a Michigan driver’s license.
  • If you’re relocating from one part of the state to another, you’ll need to submit a change of address notification to update the information on your Michigan driver’s license and vehicle registration documents.
  • If you need help finding work in or near your new city, visit the Southeast Michigan Community Alliance (SEMCA) for job postings, training opportunities, and information on applying for unemployment insurance (UI).
  • Have some fun! There are so many great activities to enjoy in Southeast Michigan, and many are free.

Moving can be a pain, especially when you’re relocating to a new city or state. But thanks to these tips and resources, moving to Southeast Michigan doesn’t have to be such a hassle. Before you know it, you’ll be settled into your home and exploring your new city!
